Music education is about more than playing in the school band.

It's about being creative, finding inspiration, and feeling a sense of accomplishment. But more and more, kids are missing out.

That's where MusiCan helps.

Through MusiCan, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), is dedicated to making sure that kids don't miss out - that every child, irrespective of socio-economic circumstances and cultural background, has an opportunity to participate. In partnership with Canada's music industry, media and business communities, our mission is to ensure that young Canadians have access to a comprehensive music program through their school system.

MusiCan, includes Band Aid, Scholarships for exceptional graduates of Music Industry Arts Programs and other music education initiatives.

Over the years, many Canadian superstars have lent tremendous support to the CARAS Music Education Program, providing inspiration and vision to thousands of students. BAND AID grant presentations have been made by 54o40, Susan Aglukark, Jann Arden, Jully Black, Jane Bunnett, Keshia Chant, Jim Cuddy, Audrey de Montigny, Doc Walker, Kathleen Edwards, Great Big Sea, Ryan Malcolm, Matt Mays, Alanis Morissette, Nickelback, Kalan Porter, Jimmy Rankin, Sam Roberts, Remy Shand, Shaye, The Ennis Sisters, Shania Twain, The Tragically Hip, Hawksley Workman and others.

Making Music Makes You Smarter

•  A recent study by University of Toronto Professor, Glenn Schellenberg found the IQ of 6-year old music students rose nearly three points higher than those who did not receive any music lessons. ( Toronto Star , July 14, 2004)

•  Neuroscientists now know that infants are born with neural mechanisms devoted exclusively to music. Studies show that early and ongoing musical training helps organize and develop children's brains. (Susan Black, The Musical Mind The American School Board Journal , January 1997)

•  A 1984 study by Mueller found that physical, mental, emotional, and social development is faster when students learn a musical instrument. (Jeanne Akin, Music Makes A Difference Lafayette Arts and Science Foundation, 1987)

•  A two-year Swiss study involving 1,200 children in 50 schools showed that students involved in the music programs were better at languages, learned to read more easily, showed an improved social climate, showed more enjoyment in school and had a lower level of stress than non-music students. (E.W. Weber, Et Al. 1993)
